Congratulations, Class of 2023!
May 19, 2023
Waverly Community Members,
I want to offer a hearty congratulations to the Waverly School Senior Class of 2023! This group has been through many challenges and emerged as critical and essential leaders of our school. In a couple short weeks we will be bidding them farewell during Waverly’s graduation exercises. Our senior class has achieved a lot during one of the most challenging periods in our nation’s recent history. A pandemic and a fundamental reevaluation of our social fabric and race relations underpinned major shifts at Waverly. They lost many important people and have continually sought to articulate what Waverly means to them and what it can mean for others. The Waverly senior class is outspoken in the name of progressive education, outspoken in the name of social justice, and outspoken in the name of fun. They are a loud and irreverent bunch. Fun to be around and eager to show that they care. This is the thing I’ve picked up from them most: they care about Waverly and they want to make a difference.
Our faculty is overjoyed for them as they reach graduation and sad for their departure. During our recent senior retreat I expressed to them my sadness and my apology on behalf of the school that their time was marked by tremendous conflict and upset. I also promised to them that the faculty, administration, and board would do everything we can to make sure that our programs are robust, supportive, and engaging and that our teachers are well supported.
You can see from the college list below that our students have set their sights high and that they are poised to challenge themselves by attending universities and colleges that meet their individual needs and goals. The list includes all schools where Waverly students gained admission and the bolded entries denote where they will attend. Each of these schools are readily identified as some of the best schools in our region and country. Our graduates have been offered exceptional guidance and insight from their teachers, college counselor Elaine Lass, and their parents! Waverly has been and remains an excellent place that “cultivates curious, resourceful, confident learners who demonstrate intellectual engagement, critical and creative thinking, respect for individual differences, a strong awareness of personal responsibility, and an active commitment to social justice.” The graduating seniors have demonstrated this with clarity and bravery!
High school graduation will be held at 6:00 p.m. on June 2 in the quad at the Scarborough Family High School Campus. I hope you get the opportunity to congratulate our seniors in person or in spirit. I know they will carry forward the best of what Waverly has to offer, leave behind what doesn’t serve them, and help us learn from the challenges of the recent years. I am honored to have worked with them and proud they will represent Waverly in schools across the world.
In community,
Clarke Weatherspoon
