Welcome from the Head of School

Clarke Weatherspoon 02

Welcome to The Waverly School, home of the Ravens! We are excited to share some important information with you about our school. I hope you find our offerings compelling and inspiring as you identify the next step in your family’s journey.

A few important ideas to share about Waverly:

First, we are a progressive school that cares about people. We learn by doing. Our classes emphasize collaboration, discussion, and tinkering. We ask students to learn about themselves and to share what they find. We do this through exploring our personal and familial identities, reflecting on essential questions, and honoring the experiences of others.

Second, but not less important, we strive to be about social justice education. We want students to develop and understand their own personal values, investigate their own family’s values, and to have dialogues with their peers about how we can make the world a better place. We emphasize positive, nurturing relationships that respect community members of all ages and backgrounds. We honor differences and teach students to stand for what they believe in. This isn’t always neat or easy, though it prepares students for life beyond the walls of our school.

We are a small school where students get to know their teachers and have a voice in how the school operates. We are committed to helping students enjoy their childhoods without burying them in homework or turning their youth into a pre-professional series of tasks and busy work. Through honoring the joy of childhood and devolving programs that prepare students for the challenges of life at and beyond school, we know that every student who becomes a Raven will soar on their own terms and feel comfortable at any altitude, in any winds, and under any circumstances.

It’s great to meet you and share so much of what makes our school wonderful.

Enthusiastically,

Clarke Weatherspoon
Head of School
