Journalism: Creating an Online Publication through Field Trips (Billy Hackett and Bennel Thompkins)
Field trips are the best! Students will spend two weeks going on field trips throughout Los Angeles County. At the same
time, they will build skills that will help them succeed in school, including collecting video, photographs, and interviews
from each trip. They will then use that material to create an online, multi‐media newsletter. See last year’s example

Spanish! Invent new and exciting words! In this class, you will be introduced to the foundations of Latin grammar and
vocabulary, translate Latin passages, and learn about Roman history. Homework assignments will include short
translations, vocabulary practice, and various fun activities to reinforce concepts, vocabulary, and information learned in
class.

Students will learn basic robotics by building and programming a robot with the 2010 Lego Mindstorms NXT Kits. Their
robots will perform specific tasks such as picking up an object, following a path, and having a tug of war challenge.
Students will also discover Newton’s law of physics by building a “top‐spinning robot.” Alternative energy possibilities will
be discovered by attaching solar panels to projects, and we’ll experience the surprises of action‐reaction with the
“Hammer Bot.”

Photo Art—How to Make and How to Take (Jen Dakan)
Did you know that you do not need state of the art equipment to create beautiful photographs? Do you
already have hundreds of great photos and no idea what to do with them? Do you like to make cool
stuff? Take this class! Meet some of your fellow incoming 7th and 8th grade classmates, while creating
cool photo projects from your own images. These projects will inspire you to take more and even better
photographs! In addition to creating several photo projects, we will discuss the art of composition, and
how to improve your images. We will talk about iPhone applications you may not know about, to create
more artistic and creative photos. We will take some photos (bring your phone!), make stuff with photos
(no computers or software needed!), and we will explore technique to develop your EYE.
