The Waverly School will offer the following summer school courses for students in middle and high school. The AP preparatory classes (listed first) are required for entry into the fall courses.  All classes are subject to cancellation if enrollment is low.   Please be sure to fill out the accompanying registration form and return it to our Business Office by Tuesday, April 30, 2013.

AP Biology Prep (Guy Hallman)

Required for admission to AP Biology in Fall 2013.  Teacher approval required.

The Academic Essay for High School Students (Grete Howland)

Students will work on constructing evidence-based essays that advance a critical argument. We will focus on such elements as developing a thesis, writing coherent paragraphs, integrating textual evidence, and managing the logical flow of an argument from the beginning to end of a composition. We will start with a critical essay about literature and will extend our work to other subject areas (history, social sciences, science) depending on the interests of the students. The skills developed in this class will be in keeping with those required for a typical freshman composition class.

College Admissions Essay Writing (Amy Sedivy)

Practice writing essays for the Common Application and supplemental applications from a variety of colleges and universities.  Students will read real application essays, write rough drafts, share drafts with each other, and work on refining drafts into essays they can use for their own applications.

Creative Writing: Fantasy & Science Fiction (Amy Sedivy)

If you love to read fantasy and science fiction and have lots of ideas for your own stories, this class will help you create believable characters, fantastical settings, and plots that pull the reader into your world.  Bring your favorite books so we can discuss what makes them so great, and bring your ideas, too.  We will be writing in class and sharing our work with each other.

Creative Writing: Poetry (Grete Howland)

Come read, write, and talk about poetry in a positive and relaxed environment this summer!  We will study and practice a variety of styles, listen to famous writers read their work, and workshop our own poems as a group.  All are welcome!

Middle School Writing & Math Workshop  (Billy Hackett and Alex Carter)

Become a more proficient writer while solidifying your math skills necessary to succeed in middle and high school.  In the writing workshop, students will practice writing and editing using an academic tone.  The focus will be on structure, proper grammar, and punctuation.  We will move through the writing process, from planning and brainstorming to crafting a final draft, and students will be prepared for the type of writing expected in middle and high school expository writing assignments.  In the math workshop, students will build and improve their understanding of fractions, decimals, and percents in real world scenarios including clear examples from sports, shopping, financial investing, comparing cell phone plans, opening a business, and more.

Journalism: Creating an Online Publication through Field Trips (Billy Hackett & Alex Carter)

Field trips are the best!  Students will spend two weeks going on field trips throughout Los Angeles County.  At the same time, they will build skills that will help them succeed in school, including collecting video, photographs, and interviews from each trip.  They will then use that material to create an online, multi-media newsletter.  See an example here: https://sites.google.com/a/thewaverlyschool.org/summer2011/

Algebra Enrichment (Jack Knight)

This course will cover basic problem-solving techniques and core algebraic concepts used in Algebra I classes.  Students will work on strengthening skills including simplifying algebraic expressions and polynomials, graphing, factoring, and solving equations, inequalities, and systems of equations.

Geometry Enrichment (Jack Knight)

This course will explain how geometry concepts can be applied to problem-solving, preparing students to be good thinkers and to understand the logic behind geometry.  Students will learn formats for writing proofs, theorems, angles, perimeter and area, polygons, trigonometry, and area/volume.

Introduction to  Computer Science (Jack Knight)

This course explains information technology and computer science, giving students the opportunity to learn basic programming language and networking techniques.  Students will understand binary numbers, writing code, routers, switches, and assigning IP addresses.

South Asian Cooking (Jack Knight)

Discover the tastes of Sri Lanka/India, learning about spices and curry powders.  The focus will be on creating special dishes and then enjoying them.  The class is open to both students and adults.
