AP Biology Prep

AP English Language and Composition (for credit)

This class will cover much of the requirements for AP English Language and Composition in four weeks. The course then continues at a slower pace during the 2010-2011 school year until the AP exam in May 2011. As such, the homework load will be fairly rigorous during the summer, approximately one to two hours of reading and/or writing a night. During the school year, this will be reduced to about one to two hours a week. However, there will also be weekly assignments posted online which must be submitted to Sharon by email.
Open only to rising juniors and seniors; approval of the faculty is required.
Creative Writing: Fantasy & Science Fiction

If you love to read fantasy and science fiction and have lots of ideas for your own stories, this class will help you create believable characters, fantastical settings and plots that pull the reader into your world. Bring your favorite books so we can discuss what makes them so great. And bring your ideas; we will be writing in class and sharing our work with each other.
Introduction to Algebra

This course will cover basic problem-solving techniques and core Algebra concepts used in Algebra1 classes. The course material will help students work on their weak areas to become successful in Algebra1. The students will also learn Algebra 1 concepts such as simplifying Algebraic expressions, graphing techniques, factoring techniques, solving equations and inequalities, simplifying polynomials and solving systems of equations.
South Asian Cooking
6/22/10 – 7/15/10 (4 weeks) (T & Th) 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Location: High School Campus

Discover the tastes of Sri Lanka. Participants will learn about the various spices used in Sri Lankan cooking and will have the opportunity to make curry powders. But the focus of the class will be on making exotic Sri Lankan dishes and then eating them! This class is open to high school students and adults.
Field Trip Class:
Producing an online, Multimedia news source via field trips in greater LA area
7/12/10 – 7/22/10 (2 weeks) (M-Th) 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Location: High School Campus, Nelson House
Teachers: Bennel Thompkins and Billy Hackett
Cost: $450 (admissions fees not included)
Aren't field trips the best? Students in this course will spend two weeks going on field trips throughout Los Angeles County. At the same time, they will build skills that will help them succeed in school. Students will collect video, photographs, and interviews during each field trip. They will then use that information to write articles and create an online multimedia newspaper.
The field trips will include:
- Los Angeles Times building and printing facility
- Los Angeles Sparks WNBA basketball game
- Rancho Cucamonga Quake minor league baseball game
- Griffith Park Observatory and Planetarium show
- Japanese American National Museum
- Cooking lesson at a local culinary institute
Parent drivers for field trips will be welcome; come along; you’ll love it!

Power of Numbers: Middle School Math Review & Prep
7/6/10 – 7/9/10 (T-F) 9:00 – 11:00 a.m.

Let the power of numbers work for you by building skills and confidence in a system of learning
math. This course covers the skills involved with fractions, decimals, and
percents, while incorporating concepts of Pre-Algebra and Algebra. Investigate the stock market,
grocery prices, and advertised sales to understand the magic of numbers at work in our world.
