Admissions Procedures

Because Waverly offers a unique progressive program, we believe it is especially important for prospective families to have as much information as possible before choosing to apply. For this reason, we offer comprehensive tours lasting over two hours during the school day. During the tour, parents and guardians will have the opportunity to hear from Heidi Johnson, Head of School, about our program, visit classrooms, and ask questions of current Waverly parents. For the middle and high school we also have open house in the evening in January, so that students will have the opportunity to meet the teachers and hear directly from them about the program. All applicants also have  an opportunity to visit the campus during the school day as part of the application process.

The Waverly School seeks students who are:

  • Self-motivated, engaged learners
  • Supportive, active, and honest members of the community
  • Interested in the complexity and diversity of people, their experiences, and knowledge
  • Able to develop a strong sense of themselves based on honest reflection

We welcome families whose goals for their children are compatible with the school’s goals. A diverse student body is an essential component of an experiential education. Waverly seeks a diverse community in order to fulfill its mission to provide a strong humanistic education for all students. The Waverly School embraces diversity and values the integrity of the individual. Individual differences of religion, national origin, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and gender are acknowledged and respected. Every member of the community strives to behave in a sensitive, tolerant, and respectful manner.

Tours for Parents and Guardians

Group tours are held regularly between October/November and January each year. All family members who will be involved in admissions decisions should attend a regularly scheduled tour. If spaces are still available, tours are held periodically between April and August.

Application Deadline

The online application must be submitted by February 1, 2017 in order to be considered for the first round of admissions.

Testing

The Waverly School’s admissions process does not include formal testing, such as the ISEE.  Our goal, instead, is to approximate each student’s individual skill set to ensure that all students fall within an appropriate range of learning levels in any one class. We pay very careful attention to information provided in prospective students’ transcripts and teacher recommendations.

Teacher Recommendation

Complete the top portion of the form and deliver it to the applicant’s current teacher. (7th-12th grade applicants need two teacher recommendations.) Teacher recommendations must be submitted in sealed letterhead envelopes from the appropriate school. Download a teacher recommendation form (PDF):

Transcripts

Complete the Transcript Release Form and submit it to the applicant’s current school. (Young kindergarten and kindergarten applicants do not need transcripts.) Transcripts must be submitted in sealed letterhead envelopes from the appropriate school. Download a transcript request form (PDF)

Student Visits

Our Admissions Director will contact prospective families to schedule a visit for each applicant. Visits will be scheduled between January and February for first round applicants; late spring and summer applicants will visit only after admissions files are complete.

Admissions Notification

Decision letters will be sent by March 10 for first round applicants.

Non-Discrimination Policy

The Waverly School does not discriminate in matters of employment, recruitment, admissions, or the administration of any programs on the basis of race, creed, gender, sexual orientation, or national/ethnic origin.

International Students

At this time, The Waverly School does not accept applications from international students and is not able to offer, process, or assist in the procurement of student visas (I-20). Applicants must be able to provide proof of visa or other documentation demonstrating ability to attend non-public school in the United States before an application can be processed.  Please visit www.pasadenaareaschools.org for information on other schools in the area.
