Heidi_Johnson_HOSHeidi Johnson has been Waverly’s Head of School for eighteen years and looks forward to many more. She has a B.A. in political science, a teaching credential, and a Master’s degree in Education from the University of California, Los Angeles. Heidi has worked for more than 30 years in public and private schools at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Heidi’s two children graduated from Waverly: Sam in 2003 and Ryland in 2008. When she’s not at Waverly, Heidi is hiking with her dachshund and Labrador, reading fiction, or puttering in her California natives garden.

Jason_GottliebJason Gottlieb is the Assistant Head of School at the elementary school. He has a B.A. in Political Studies from Pitzer College and a Master’s of Arts in Teaching from Seattle University. He has taught for over 25 years and joined the Waverly community in 2009. His youngest son Sam is in tenth grade; his older sons graduated from Waverly–Patrick in 2016, and Eamonn in 2015. In his free time, Jason enjoys family time, watching Manchester United play (and hopefully win!) and keeping a daily journal.

Joel Murillo is the Assistant Head of School at the middle and high school. Joel has a B.A. in Spanish from Dartmouth College and has completed advanced coursework in mathematics and education. Joel spent eleven years at Wildwood School in West Los Angeles as Director of Middle School and high school Spanish teacher. His daughters, Lila and Lucia, are Waverly students in the fifth and seventh grades. An avid gardener and cook, Joel enjoys exploring the diverse food and culture of the many neighborhoods in Los Angeles with his family.

Amy SlobodaAmy Sloboda is is Middle School Dean. Amy has an M.F.A in film and video from California Institute of the Arts and a B.A. from University of Nevada, Las Vegas where she studied English and film.  She spent seven years at Wildwood School in West Los Angeles where she was the Administrative Director and taught the film elective.  Prior to working at Waverly, Amy was a consultant for Cal/West Educators, guiding independent school board members through the process of hiring heads of school.  Amy has two children, Nola and Kanaan, and two lovable rescue dogs, Josie and Katie. She spends her downtime with her husband and children at home or exploring Los Angeles and trying out new restaurants in their NELA neighborhood.

Jennifer_DakanJennifer Dakan is Waverly’s Admissions Director. Jennifer has a B.A. in English from the University of San Francisco, a teaching credential from San Jose State University, and over thirteen years of experience teaching middle and high school students. She has two sons at Waverly: Charlie in eighth grade and Sam in tenth. Her eldest son Leo graduated from Waverly in 2016. Jen enjoys creative writing and photography and shares these interests with Waverly’s middle school students.

2013-2014 Teacher Pics 147Elaine Lass has been Waverly’s Director of College Counseling for since 2003. She has a BA in psychology and education from Chaminade University of Honolulu, a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology from Loyola Marymount University and a teaching and pupil personnel credential. Elaine has worked in college counseling for over 30 years and still loves being a part of the challenging application process.  When she’s not working she enjoys spending time on the beach with her husband and children as well as visiting colleges to stay in tune with the student experience.

Tracey-FissTracey Fiss is Waverly’s Business and Facilities Manager. Tracey has a B.A. in Economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara and many years of business management experience. Before coming to Waverly, Tracey worked as a corporate manager for eleven years. In her free time, Tracey loves riding her bicycle at the beach.

Carolyn HomCarolyn Hom, Development Director, has a B.S. in journalism from the University of Southern California. Carolyn has worked in development, marketing, and public relations for more than 35 years. As a fund-raising consultant of some 20 years, she served an array of non-profits, including many independent schools. She was Chief Development Officer for Foothill Family Service, capital campaign director for St. Mark’s School (Altadena) and vice president for development and marketing at the Autry Museum of Western Heritage. She and her husband are Pasadena residents who enjoy travel and trying out the region’s many and varied restaurants. Their son, who attended area independent schools, lives and works in Dallas.
