Not Your Average Holiday Show

For parents who remember participating in their own school holiday shows (which consisted of the class standing in a line, wearing Santa hats and singing a Christmas song), the Waverly holiday show will be an especially wonderful surprise. The original show was held at the little theater at Farnsworth Park. Each teacher put together their own number and every class participated.  The show was very long and there was not enough seating for everyone. Mandy Boesche, a Waverly parent at the time, asked Tim Ford, then Director of Waverly, if she could be the manager of the show. Mandy worked with Occidental College to rent Thorne Hall. Occidental has been very generous, allowing Waverly access to their theater and crew, for over twenty years, to make our professionally lit, beautiful show possible. In the early years, we did not fill all of the 800 seats and were able to invite prospective parents to attend. When one year the show was delayed because there was not enough seating for everyone, we began ticketing the event. The show has never been holiday specific but rather a lovely way to bring the whole community together to celebrate the beginning of winter break. The elementary numbers are usually theme-related, with a lot of variation.  The extraordinary thing about these performances is that there is only one rehearsal on stage, held the day before the show. Each year is remarkable in its own way.  Year after year, the kids and teachers are able to pull off unique and often complicated numbers. Each year when the show is over, people can be heard saying, “This year was the best yet!”  Curious?  Click here to see a slideshow from past years! Happy holidays to our wonderful Waverly family!
